Something else occurred to me today, about how easy it is to shut down and shut people out. To shut out an entire group, a race, a nation, a family, a social group because we have been hurt by one person in that group. It is much easier to shut the door on a whole group, than to recognize that we have been injured by one person, who so poorly represented their ‘group’ and hurt us. I think we have to try to keep the doors open, of our minds, our hearts, our lives, not to generalize, or condemn an entire group for the sins of one person.

3:20Unknown-5Oprah’s Forgiveness

I deserve to forgive

Was it really unforgivable? Everyone deserves forgiveness —and we deserve to forgive.

From the January 25, 1988 issue of the Christian Science Sentinel

In a message to her Church in 1902, Mrs. Eddy had this to say about the importance of forgiving: “The Christian Scientist cherishes no resentment; he knows that that would harm him more than all the malice of his foes. Brethren, even as Jesus forgave, forgive thou. I say it with joy,—no person can commit an offense against me that I cannot forgive. Meekness is the armor of a Christian, his shield and his buckler.”

Resentment is indignant displeasure or anger about some act we consider to have been injurious. It can lead us to rehearse the act, mentally or orally, over and over. Such cherishing of resentment indicates that we are believing that the material picture is real, rather than understanding the spiritual perfection that is the truth. Testimonies in the Christian Science periodicals tell of individuals who were healed of all sorts of difficulties—physical, moral, financial, emotional, and so forth—when they were able to forgive a wrong and to understand more of man as God made him.
