“Union of the masculine and feminine qualities constitutes completeness. The masculine mind reaches a higher tone through certain elements of the feminine, while the feminine mind gains courage and strength through masculine qualities.  These different elements conjoin naturally with each other and their true harmony is in spiritual oneness. Both sexes should be loving, pure, tender, and strong.

Every individual exists in reality as an idea in Mind, each equally endowed with all that God has and of equal importance to the all-loving Father-Mother God. This glorious fact becomes clearer and finds an ever larger measure of expression in the affairs of humanity as Christian Science compels the limited material sense of being to give place to the immortal facts regarding God’s creation.

Mind’s ideas, from the least to the greatest, are complete, for they are the expression of the one perfect creator. Infinite Mind cannot create an idea lacking anything, and man, the highest idea, the very image of God, cannot lack any quality of God.

“Masculine, feminine, and neuter genders are human concepts,” writes Mary Baker Eddy onpage 516 of “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.” Human concepts, by reason of their very nature, are incapable of showing forth the true nature of man in his completeness. It is therefore to the spiritual concept that we must look for what is actual regarding man.

In the first chapter of Genesis, which contains the true account of creation, it is stated that God created man “male and female.” We read (verse 27), “God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” Christian Science teaches that man, the climax of God’s creation, is the full and complete expression of the one Father-Mother Mind.

Each individual included by the term “generic man” possesses and reflects all the qualities of true manhood and womanhood. God, good, has not given certain qualities to one of His ideas and certain other qualities to another idea. The real man, God’s complete idea, reflects all the qualities of God. This fact, accepted and understood, rules out the erroneous belief that God’s idea, individually and collectively, is incomplete.

The human mind classifies strength and courage as qualities belonging to men and tenderness and compassion as belonging to women. But during the recent war women in munitions factories and in various positions successfully performed tasks ordinarily considered beyond female capability; and these women were not found lacking in vitality, courage, and skill. And with what motherly care soldiers have always ministered to the needs of a fallen comrade; with what patient tenderness brave men dealt with victims of air-raid attacks! Such instances prove false the common belief that particular qualities belong exclusively to men and others exclusively to women.

Each one of us must claim his God-given completeness and demonstrate it. All, not part, of the qualities of Mind are man’s, for God has created him a complete idea.

Realization of the nature of God and of man alone is able to heal the unnatural enmity and friction sometimes existing between men and women in industries and professions, as well as in politics. A limited material sense of being takes the attitude that women should not be accorded an equal status with men under the law and denies them fair and equal participation in government. The scientific understanding of man as revealed in Christian Science is leveling human thinking, improving the conditions and relations between men and women in every sphere of activity and in every walk of life. More abundant evidence of this will appear as the truth regarding man’s completeness is seen and accepted. An individual’s eligibility to hold office in many instances need not be based on the human classification “male” or “female,” but on true worth and ability.

On page 249 of “The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany” Mrs. Eddy writes: “The report that I prefer to have a man, rather than a woman, for First Reader in The Church of Christ, Scientist, I desire to correct. My preference lies with the individual best fitted to perform this important function. If both the First and Second Readers are my students, then without reference to sex I should prefer that student who is most spiritually-minded.”

There is but one creator, infinite Mind, and God’s man expresses his perfect creator in completeness and unity. “One infinite God, good, unifies men and nations; constitutes the brotherhood of man; ends wars; fulfils the Scripture, ‘Love thy neighbor as thyself;’ annihilates pagan and Christian idolatry,—whatever is wrong in social, civil, criminal, political, and religious codes; equalizes the sexes,” writes our Leader on page 340 of Science and Health.

That the world is awakening to the need of equalizing the sexes is apparent. One instance may be found in the United Nations Charter, formulated at San Francisco in 1945. In the preamble to that charter and in a number of its articles the equality of men and women is definitely recognized. Article VIII reads as follows: “The United Nations shall place no restrictions on the eligibility of men and women to participate in any capacity and under conditions of equality in its principal and subsidiary organs.” We may well greet these signs which betoken an ever-increasing measure of light reaching humanity, dispelling the belief of inequality.

In God’s kingdom, the only realm, His children are eternally, perpetually, reflecting Him in all His glorious qualities and ability. As we seek to grow in our understanding of God and His creation, we begin to comprehend the completeness and perfection of man. Also we see that we must claim perfection for ourselves; we must claim the completeness of true manhood and womanhood. The sexes will be equalized in ever greater measure as the truths of God and man permeate human thinking. Completeness is the fact regarding each individual idea of Mind, and this fact is the true basis of equality.
