Don’t Quit

*Originally aired on the EI website on August 29,2011

Gerard Haughey claimed to have written this poem some ten years ago while working at a psychiatric hospital. He wrote poems and put them on a bulletin board in the hospital’s day-room. He had a distinct recollection of putting every word of the poem down on paper and posting the poem on the bulletin board. The first time Gerard even thought about the poem again, was some years later when he saw it, on a plaque, at a friends home (whom he worked with at the hospital)- He did a triple take and the first thing he told her was “I wrote that poem”-

Having had a prescription drug addiction for 8 years after several automobile accident’s- Gerard felt as though he were on his death bed.

Gerard cast to death, instead his drug addiction in just several weeks, not by his own strength but of ‘The power of the Holy Spirit that was in me’. He goes on to explain how he tapered his 8 year prescription addiction to oxycontin at home without any detox center or medication- “I wept throughout the entire tapering process.”

From his experience he as written many poems to express his joy and thanks and love for Jesus Christ.

                                     Don’t Quit

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,

When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill,

When the funds are low, and the debts are high,

And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,

When care is pressing you down a bit,

Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns,

As everyone of us sometimes learns,

And many a failure turns about,

When he might have won had he stuck it out;

Don’t give up though the pace seems slow,

you might succeed with another blow.

Success is failure turned inside out,

the silver tint of the clouds of doubt,

And you can never tell how close you are,

It may be near when it seems so far;

So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit,

It’s when things seem worse, that you must not quit.
