The light of Truth and Love can illumine our paths, whether we are in war-torn areas, dangerous cities, or traveling through our own neighborhoods where diversity and differences might keep us from embracing our fellow man.

We are not alone in the quest for brotherly love and goodness. God, divine Love, is with us, always and everywhere, and Love will sustain us and answer our prayers. Love will bless us and our fellow man.

Love and wisdom trump hatred

With the tragic deaths of the United States’s ambassador to Libya, J. Christopher Stevens, and three American officers at the consulate in Benghazi, we lament this loss and wonder what the world is coming to. Does unselfish service mean people are vulnerable to attacks from fanatics? Are revenge and religious strife keeping citizens of the world at odds with one another?

A young Marine officer, recently serving in Iraq, was able to guide his men into restraint and calm after they witnessed the tragic death of their favorite corporal, whose lead vehicle in their convoy struck an IED and was blown up. The troops immediately wanted to seek revenge in the nearby town, hunting for the perpetrators and smoking out the bad guys. Instead, the young officer, who also happens to be my son, corralled his troops and literally stayed up all night in prayer, lest his men sneak out under darkness and attack the
village.

He prayed for guidance and asked God for some words to share with his men to quell the fires of hatred and revenge. And as he looked up in the Iraqi skies at the stars, which were present even in Abraham’s day, the officer found comfort in the Marine Corps hymn, which includes these words: “We will … fight for right and freedom. And to keep our honor clean.” These were the words he could share with his men. Keeping their honor, their motives and actions, pure would ensure that they were doing the right thing. The next morning there was peace and calm among the troops after they heard these words, and the mission continued without further incident. No villagers were harmed.
