And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

John 8:32

Daily Bread

After emigrating to the United States, I started working in a restaurant. Work there was very difficult, and as a result I was suffering from a lot of pain. I took painkillers, and, without realizing it, became addicted to them. A doctor found that I had a hernia, severe muscle tension, and stomach problems, and, paradoxically, prescribed more pills to relieve the pain.

Every day on my way to work, I passed by a Christian Science Reading Room. In 2009, out of curiosity, I decided to walk inside and inquire about it. The Reading Room attendant explained to me that Christian Science is about Mind-healing, that is, healing through understanding the divine Mind, God. I began reading the book Science and Health, along with the Bible. I learned that God created me as His image and likeness, and that as such I was spiritual and perfect. I reflected God’s attributes, and that meant that illness, addiction, and pain were unreal, false—a mistake about myself.  I clung to these ideas, constantly praying.

One day, while reading Luke 7:47 from the Bible, I felt Jesus’ words talking to me with a tender firm voice, telling me, “Your sins are forgiven, your faith has made you whole; go in peace.” At that moment, I was deeply moved. Tears came to my eyes, and I felt an indescribable sense of peace.

I continued reading Science and Health, and understanding it better. All my prior knowledge about philosophy and theology fell apart like a castle built on the sand. It was as if my thinking was emptied and then the ideas of Christian Science were filling it. Incredibly, all fears left me completely. I felt trust in God and stopped taking pills. Gradually, the pain, the symptoms of hernia, and the stomach problems disappeared. At my job I felt no more pain or fatigue as before; I felt well. All this, however, is not much compared to the spiritual elevation I received through studying and practicing Christian Science.

Finding Christian Science was a blessing. It changed my life by revealing the spiritual truth of being to me. I see now that God guided me to this country to find Christian Science, and that it did not happen by chance. Now I understand Jesus’ parable about the “pearl of great price” (Matt. 13:46). In Miscellaneous Writings 1883–1896, Mrs. Eddy emphasized that you have to buy this pearl—it is not free (see p. 253). To me this means that no sacrifice is too much for what it’s worth, and I must strive to understand Truth and show perseverance, sincerity, love, dedication, humility, and joy.

I am convinced that the teachings of Christian Science contain the revelation of Life, Truth, and Love that I was seeking for so long.
